Training Week #25 (Peak Training Week)

Peak training continues at a vigorous pace. This is my 3rd straight week of 22+ training hours. I hope to continue this until tapering starts in 2 short weeks. I made a few adjustments this week. First, I feel that I have been neglecting the run, and will need to be able to pull off some respectable running effort under extreme fatigue. So I decided to run at least 10k every day (except my rest day). With my medium (15 mile) and long runs (24 miles) I ran a total of 65 miles (over 104 km). This is my biggest running week ever. Unfortunately, I had to cut somewhere, and it turned out to be the bike. I only did 2 cycling sessions all week. One of these was the Tour de Tonka century ride. I finished the ride in 6:51-including rest stops (14.6 mph). I had wanted to minimize the use of rest stops, but it was a very hot day (got up close to 90 degrees) and I kept having to refill my Gatorade bottles. The rest stops are not set up like aid stations at Ironman events. I have to pull in, park the bike, walk into the aid station, stand in line for 10-15 minutes for Gatorade, etc. When I look at my “moving time”, I completed the hot and hilly course in 5:47 (17.4 mph).

I am getting very worried about my open water swim. I have done almost no open water training this year. All the lakes around here have had issues with “swimmers itch” which would be a great way to quickly derail my training. I guess I will just make an effort to hop into the lake in Madison pre-race…

The Plan:

Monday-Rest
Tuesday-1:00 swim/1:00 run
Wednesday-1:00 bike/0:30 run (with transition)
Thursday-1:00 swim/1:30 bike
Friday-1:30 run
Saturday-5:30 bike/1:00 run
Sunday-1:30 bike/2:30 run

2 hour swim, 9:30 hour bike, 6:30 hour run
Total-18 hours/11 activities

What I did:
Monday-0:45 bike/1:01 run (10 miles/6.4 miles)
Tuesday-Rest
Wednesday-1:03 run/2:00 swim (6.5 miles/2.5 miles)
Thursday-4:22 run (24.0 miles)
Friday-1:02 run/1:43 swim (6.6 miles/2.5 miles)
Saturday-6:51 bike/1:02 run (100.6 miles/6.5 miles)
Sunday-2:41 run (15 miles)

Weekly Total
3:43 swim, 7:36 bike, 11:11 run (% change from week 24: -29.7%, -20.3% , +55.0%)
5.0 mile swim, 110.6 mile bike, 65.0 mile run (% change from week 24: -29.1%, -21.1%, +52.6%)

Total-22:30 hours/180.6 miles/10 activities

Grand Totals:
Swim-62:45 hours/91.0 miles
Bike-153:24 hours/2238.5 miles
Run-145:12 hours/851.1 miles

Total-361:21 hours/3180.6 miles

5 weeks to go.
